How Long Does BLS Certification Take and What to Expect in Class

One of the most common questions we hear is simple. How long does it take to get BLS certified? The good news is that Basic Life Support is one of the most time efficient certifications in healthcare. For most people the full process fits comfortably into a single visit.

The short answer on timing

An initial BLS course usually takes about three to four hours. A renewal is often shorter, since you already know the foundation and the focus is on refreshing and verifying your skills. If you choose a blended option, the online knowledge portion takes roughly one to two hours and the in person skills check is brief.

What affects the length

  • Whether you are taking an initial course or a renewal
  • Class format, fully in person or blended with online study
  • Class size and the amount of individual practice time
  • Whether you arrive prepared and on time

What to expect in class

A BLS class is hands on by design. After a focused review of the guidelines, you spend most of your time practicing on manikins. Expect to work through realistic scenarios rather than simply watching videos.

  • High quality CPR for adults, children, and infants
  • Use of an automated external defibrillator
  • Relief of choking across age groups
  • Team based resuscitation and role switching
  • Bag mask ventilation

How you are evaluated

Certification is based on demonstrating the skills correctly, so the instructor will watch your compressions, your ventilations, and your use of the AED. There is also a short knowledge check. Because the class is practice driven, most students feel ready by the time the evaluation begins.

How to prepare

A little preparation makes the day smooth and stress free.

  • Wear comfortable clothing, since you will be on the floor practicing
  • Complete any assigned online module before you arrive
  • Arrive a few minutes early to settle in
  • Bring your current card if you are renewing

After the class

Once you pass, you receive your AHA eCard, which is valid for two years nationwide. Save a copy for your records and send it to your employer or school as proof of certification. Set a reminder before your expiration date so your next renewal is easy.
