If you have been told you need a CPR card but no one explained which one, you are not alone. The two most common options from the American Heart Association are Basic Life Support, known as BLS, and Heartsaver. They sound similar, yet they are built for different people and different settings. Choosing the right one the first time saves you money, time, and the frustration of repeating a class.

BLS is designed for healthcare professionals and students heading into clinical roles. Heartsaver is designed for the workplace and the community. If your employer is a hospital, clinic, nursing program, dental office, or emergency service, you almost certainly need BLS. If you are a teacher, coach, childcare provider, fitness trainer, or office safety responder, Heartsaver is usually the right fit.
What BLS covers
BLS focuses on high quality CPR in a professional environment. The course teaches adult, child, and infant CPR, use of an automated external defibrillator, relief of choking, and how to work as part of a resuscitation team. You will practice both single rescuer and multi rescuer scenarios, bag mask ventilation, and the rhythm of switching roles smoothly during a real event.

What Heartsaver covers
Heartsaver teaches the same lifesaving foundation in a way that fits people who are not in a medical role. It centers on recognizing an emergency, calling for help, performing CPR, and using an AED. Many Heartsaver courses also include a first aid module that covers bleeding, burns, and common injuries.

How to decide in one minute
Ask yourself three questions. First, who is requiring the card? If it is a healthcare employer or a clinical program, choose BLS. Second, will you respond to emergencies as part of a medical team? If yes, choose BLS. Third, do you simply want to be ready to help at work, at home, or in your community? If yes, Heartsaver is ideal.
Will my certification be accepted?
Always confirm with the organization that is asking for the card. Most hospitals and nursing schools specify AHA BLS by name. Community employers often accept either AHA Heartsaver or an equivalent. Cost, renewal, and timing
